A single reading of 140/90 is at the threshold for high blood pressure, but one reading isn't enough for a diagnosis. Check it on several days, seated and rested for five minutes, ideally with a validated home monitor, in the morning and evening. If the average stays at or above 140/90 (or above 130/80 if you have diabetes or kidney disease), please see a doctor. Less salt, regular walks, limiting alcohol and not smoking all help. Seek urgent care if your blood pressure is above 180/120 with chest pain, breathlessness, weakness or a severe headache.
Answers are general information from doctors listed on Medoc, based only on what was asked. They are not a diagnosis or prescription, and don't replace an examination. In an emergency, call 108.
